BIO
MANdolinMAN, Belgium's best-known mandolin quartet, performs traditional Flemish melodies in a very eclectic and modern way. The group was formed in 2011 and has since toured several times in Canada, Brazil, Scandinavia, France, Spain and Germany. Played on four mandolins, traditional music takes on new forms and old melodies take on a modern and contemporary feel.
- Andries Boone: mandolin
- Peter-Jan Daems: 10-string mandolin
- Maarten Decombel: mandocello
- Dirk Naessens: mandolin
Composers
After two successful albums of contemporary adaptations of traditional music from our regions ("Old Tunes, Dusted Down" & "Unfolding The Roots"), MANdolinMAN, together with Mathijs Bertel (Ansatz Der Maschine), takes this repertoire one step further. By adding samples, beats and soundscapes, the old melodies are given a new, unheard and organic sound and form the perfect soundtrack to Jonas Van Thielen's rewritten version of "Houtekiet" (1939).
If there is one book in Flemish literature that shapes the timeless and universal nature of this music and the contrast between old and new, it is this novel by Gerard Walschap. A feverish epic about the founding of the village of Deps by the irresistible primeval man, the taciturn naturalist
Jan Houtekiet.
A pagan gospel about the birth of civilisation, but also a blueprint of the generally human, living and dying.
