BIO
The Ghent Folk Violin Project, also known as GFVP, is making its return. After several years of silence, the desire to perform together on stage again was simply too strong. The unique sound of four 'swinging' folk violins, accompanied by a rhythmic guitar, remains at the heart of their music, blending traditional and new compositions, now enriched by an additional decade of stage experience. Despite the diverse backgrounds of the four violinists, their playing is remarkably unified. The violins merge beautifully into a tight, almost vibrato-free sound. Add the fantastic support of the guitar, and the result is an incredibly diverse mix of folk, classical, world music, and jazz.
Composer and conductor Wouter Vandenabeele fully embraces young talent, each with their own distinct style. Lotte Remmen brings an elegant classical sound, Anouk Sanczuk leans toward bold jazz, and Naomi Vercauteren flirts with subtle folk-swing. They are acoustically supported by guitarist Jeroen Knapen. GFVP represents European traditional music with surprising crossovers, partly inspired by the avant-garde compositions of John Zorn and the provocative minimalism of Philip Glass.
In the spring of 2025, GFVP will release their new album OGOPOGO, named after a mythical creature from Canada. Like the legend it draws from, the music blends traditions and stories full of surprises, where truth is less important than the ongoing evolution of the myth. With this album, GFVP continues to build on a rich and imaginative tradition.
