GFVP
Ghent Folk Violin Project

BIO

The violin has always been an instrument played by people from all walks of life. It has historically found its place in both formal settings and informal occasions, from classical halls to pubs and dance halls all over the world. Although in Belgium the violin has largely faded into the background in popular music, a fantastic revival has recently taken place, spurred by initiatives such as Fiddlers on the Move and lessons from Wouter, Anouk and Naomi, among others. This revival is also supported by conservatoires offering folk violin, such as the Sibelius Academy in Finland and Berkeley in Boston. The Ghent Folk Violin Project is a leading example of this movement, combining traditional playing methods with new compositions inspired by both jazz and classical music, with a nod to old dances and modes from folk music.

The original 2012 line-up now picks up the thread. Hunger is high to write a new chapter to the GFVP story. GFVP was invited to play a first concert at the Flanders Folk Awards in AB Brussels, and also played at the Fiddlers on the move festival in front of a sold-out Centrale in Ghent. In the coming months, they will continue to work on the new repertoire, record a CD, and do a concert series.
