Stann
Etudes for Cornet & Electronics
With Etudes for Cornet & Electronics, Stann (the solo project of Stan Nieuwenhuis) embarks on an intriguing and innovative exploration of the boundaries between sound, image and technology. Drawing on the rich tradition of cornet études – from Arban to Vizzutti – he places this classical study material in a radically new context.
With just one instrument and one effects pedal (Red Panda’s Particle 2 granular delay), Stann transforms his cornet into a sonic laboratory filled with unexpected textures and rhythmic shifts. The étude becomes more than a technical exercise: it turns into a journey between strict discipline and free experimentation.
This hybrid approach takes on an additional dimension on stage through a unique scenography. Surrounding the musician is a seven-part installation designed by visual artist Monique François. Creative coder Daan Van Cauteren (Wassilyevich) brings these physical artworks to life by connecting them to the live-generated MIDI data from Stann’s playing. Music, electronics and visuals respond to one another in real time, forming a single, evolving ecosystem.
Etudes for Cornet & Electronics is an intimate yet immersive experience – a unique performance where virtuosity, visual art and sound technology converge, inviting both seasoned listeners and curious ears to discover something unexpected.
